Racial minority immigrants in the United States face discrimination and stereotyping often based in fear, envy, and rage. Violence and threats to the physical and psychological safety of immigrants and their children culminate in stress, trauma, and moral injury. This presentation will focus on the impact of moral injury within the context of immigration and racialization in contemporary U.S. context. Specifically, Dr. Tummala-Narra will explore the problem of dehumanization of racial minority immigrants, driven by racism, and how moral injury shapes individual and collective psyches as well as a culture of fear in broader U.S. society. She will describe the ways in which moral injury may be experienced and engaged with in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
